I use node-red for automations, so to solve the timeout issue I could loop the open/close command getting the state of the position before each loop until the curtains are closed. A Raspberry Pi 4 can certainly handle multiple applications but this depend on what those applications are and how they are installed. For example, my Pi 4 is running Home Assistant, Soma Connect, App Daemon, Zigbee2MQTT, Unifi Controller plus a few other things and has no problems. We sleep with the window and roller blind open, the fresh air is great but the 4 am sunrise in the summer is a bugger. I wanted something that would close the blinds just before first light.
This allows you to measure the amount of slip in the cord and the firmware will compensate for this by factoring it into the start and end points dynamically. The controller uses Bluetooth to connect to the Soma app. You may actually be fine without any further integration as the Smart Shades 2 offer some automation capabilities on their own that may be adequate.
The feeding part is easier than it looks, I tried to YOLO it and ended up going to the video because I couldn’t figure it out. The reason we don’t offer the Connect firmware as a package or separate application is the way we use the Bluetooth right now. Despite what people always think the Connect is not based on HomeBridge. We use a Node.js library called Noble to talk directly to the BT controller in the Pi and doing that we make a lot of assumption on the state of that controller. We also assume there are no other BT/BLE connections active while we use the controller.

As it happens, when I switched to using the Raspberry Pi ZeroW I just flashed the Soma Connect image onto a memory card rather than installing the package. Whereas mine had large spaces between the beads this one did not (O----O----O vs O-O-O-O). I couldn’t see that the spacing was causing an issue but I swapped it out anyway and…it completely solved the problem . The initial installation was trivial and the app’s instructions were easy to follow. I did have a couple of issues with the app crashing but, with Home Assistant, I don’t intend on using the app that much. Most of the blinds with a beaded chain have balls which diameter is approx. The connection via Soma Connect and the integration into Apple Home didn't work right away.
The Sunrise/Sunset options require access to your phone’s location to determine your latitude and season. I had trouble with this initially, even after granting the app access it still got hung up trying to determine where I was. After waiting a bit it started working, so it seems the access permission didn’t make itself available to the app quickly enough at the time. Soma provides good setup instructions on their web site, and they direct you there from the outset. While the Smart Shades app does step you through the process, you’ll need to go to the web site to see how to feed the chain into the drive gear as the app doesn’t show you.
