AMERICAN LOG HOMES
Clyde and Gail Cremer founded American Log Homes in Missouri in July 1977, moving its headquarters to Pueblo West, CO, in 1984. Built on Clyde’s childhood love of nature in rural Iowa, he went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Forestry from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. He then completed a Master of Forestry degree from the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies in 1973. Besides selling log homes kits, Clyde has served as an expert witness in log home litigations and has also completed log home inspections for clients buying already-built log homes. Gail is a retired teacher and has degrees in social work, elementary education, and has an MA in Sociology.
Due to log homes being so air-tight, they retain heat in the winter and stay cooler in the summer, resulting in a reduction in energy consumption and a smaller electric bill. Dry wood results in a very air-tight log home, free from air infiltration between logs. No caulking is required on the exterior or interior logs after the home is built. Dry wood is also lighter and most of our homes fit on one tractor-trailer without being over the legal limit. Remember, we do not allow for shrinkage due to our use of dry wood.
With the right crew and building system, it can be weather tight in as little as two weeks—for an average sized home. In conventional construction, your home is exposed to the elements for far longer, which could lead to mold issues within framing of the home, where it can thrive undetected for years. I am very pleased with the quality of the log structure due to the excellent quality of the Douglas Fir Logs and workmanship on the structure. I would also like to thank all personnel at NA Logcrafters for their support, providing additional assistance and advice because I am completing the onsite construction myself without a general contractor. Each log is hand peeled and handcrafted in the full-scribe method. That means you can do as much yourself as you please and work with contractors you are comfortable working with.
When a home is made from solid logs, you are effectively taking the carbon contained in those logs out of environmental circulation over the entire life of the home. Moreover, some log and timber home producers harvest standing dead timber or purchase logs from forests certified as sustainable. Some builders are constructing log and timber homes to green building standards as well. It does not begin shrinking until it hits 30% moisture content range. At 15% moisture content, it has shrunk to 1/2 of its theoretical maximum shrinkage. If your logs reach a final moisture content of 8% - 9% during the heating season, then minimal shrinkage will occur. Dry wood is stable wood, which means that the logs will not shrink or warp.
